PNC Bank gives students at the University an easy option to maintain their personal banking and manage their money.
PNC banking became incorporated with the University in 2011 by creating new identification cards and by placing a branch within the Union, offering students new and different amenities, according to bgsu.edu/offices/union.
“Here on campus we offer personal banking products and services, including virtual wallet,” Jeremy VanTress, branch manager for the Union PNC, said. “This is typically designed to help college students help themselves with money management.”
The virtual wallet offers students new ways to monitor their spending habits by presenting features such as a calendar, reimbursements, danger days and parent alerts, according to pnc.com.
“It is nice that we have it [PNC] localized on campus and the student wallet online is a very useful tool,” Alycia Roby, senior at the University, said.
The calendar tool in the virtual wallet allows students who attend schools that are in alliance with PNC to see major school events within the calendar while allowing for an easy way to view finances. The reimbursements feature allows students to ask someone by email to pay them back for something that was purchased by them previously, according to pnc.com.
Danger days allow for the students to be alerted when their account is running low and the parents alert allows for parents to receive notice when their student’s account is low, even if the account is not joined with parents.
PNC also offers students the ability to link the BG1 cards to their PNC accounts, VanTress said.
“BG1 cards can be linked to the PNC bank personal account that the student or faculty member may have here at PNC banking,” VanTress said.
Holly Metzger, a sophomore at the University, thinks the BG1 cards are a good idea as she takes advantage of this option.
Students can also use a BG1 card to get cash out at a PNC ATM machine, said VanTress.
To educate incoming freshmen, Vantress said, PNC partnered with student money management services on campus.
“Its department and PNC will offer onsite workshops on personal financial management and financial literacy,” VanTress said. “The topics can include basic banking, credit management, saving and investing and identity protection”
PNC has a branch located in the Union and two ATM machines located outside.
“The benefit of this location obviously provides a convenience for the students and faculty members and the ease of having someone here on campus if you need to discuss anything about their account,” VanTress said.
The hours of the Union branch are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Transactions can be done at the ATMs until midnight when the Union closes, so if a student needs to make a deposit they can still do so, VanTress said.
“I love it [PNC branch in the Union], it is so convenient,” Roby said.
PNC is one of the largest banks in the United States based on deposits and branches, with more than 2,400 branches and 6,500 ATMs across 15 states and in Washington, D.C., according to bgsu.edu/offices/union.
