Man scuffles with police over son

A Bowling Green man was arrested early Sunday after he fought with police officers who were trying to arrest his son for stabbing another man.

John A. Vargas Sr., 41, tangled with officers, giving one a cut on the left eyelid, after he saw them outside his Clough Street apartment complex.

Police were called to the apartment because Vargas’ son, John A. Vargas Jr., 23, stabbed 28-year-old Anthony Gatling in the back earlier that night.

Police were called to Wood County Hospital and photographed what appeared to be a superficial wound on Gatling’s back.

Gatling was taken to the Wood County Justice Center on an outstanding warrant for traffic offenses.

The elder Vargas was jailed on $15,000 bail for obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

His son was taken to the hospital for cuts to his face but was not arrested.

Officers confiscated two steak knives from inside the Vargas residence after obtaining a search warrant.

Vargas Jr. was taken back to his apartment after receiving treatment for injuries to the face.

Both Gatling and Vargas Jr. may face felony charges, Lt. Tony Hetrick said.

Police are consulting with prosecutors and the investigation will continue, Hetrick said.
