  • Petrofiction Review: Oil on Water
Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. A specific text that focuses on petroleum culture in political economics and environmental impact. Although Habila’s novel begins with a journalist investigating a kidnapping, the […]

Too many Spears publicity stunts

For those of you who own a TV, or speak to any given human being on the street, you’re most likely aware that Britney Spears has finally lost it. In my humble opinion I should hope you were able to see the coverage on Britney’s not-quite-mid-life crisis because frankly, it’s a sad, sad day when national breaking news can be loosely associated with a rerun of Maury.

As a good American, I glued myself to the 24-hour coverage of the story, only to take a brief bring in order to apply my “Curious” perfume. I focused my energy on the “deeper reasons” that Britney cracked. Besides, I kind of feel sorry for the poor gal – she just shouldn’t have to compete with news as uninteresting as the 2008 election.

I guess the thing that shocked me most is that Britney is actually making K-Fed look like a decent father. Her latest “cry for help”, as the news stations have been calling it, will cost her thousands in lost endorsement deals and most likely her children. I’m wondering if it just might be coincidence that her breakdown is the same week she was supposed to face her soon-to-be-ex-husband in a custody battle. I’m not even going to entertain the idea that she might have shaved her head (did I mention she shaved her head?) to eliminate evidence of drug use during her two years of non-stop pregnancy! Or maybe I am…

Props to the “Toxic” singer and former mousketter for managing to not only beat out Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie in number of rehab stints in 48 hours but to make them last shorter than her first marriage. If she would have only listened to the entire nation buzzing about what a bad idea marrying her former back-up dancer was then maybe she might still be producing platinum albums and not publicity stunts. For literally years we watched her torture the cliche of “barefoot and pregnant” and now that she’s a mother she’s not showing many signs of hanging up the tabloid-tiara. Britney has made a name for herself since she burst onto the scene at age 17, donning a submissive school-girl outfit and singing about S’M. Since then she’s’ made us scratch our heads at a bizarre reference to “Titanic” in “Oops.. I Did it Again,” kept us up for 55 hours straight waiting on a confirmed annulment and now I’m seriously considering shaving my head. Honestly, I’m a bit bewildered by Britney’s tact for making headlines. I’m not sure if we’re all really fans of her music or just wallowing in her ability to associate with A-listers while still holding onto her roots in “southern hospitality.”

To be honest I was never much of a Spears fan until recently. Not that I advocate her actions (especially regarding her children) but she seems a lot more interesting now that she’s loony. Her ploy for attention seems a little “Chaotic” to me but I suppose it’s her “Prerogative.” I might just go out and buy her album.

Amy’s really going to go out and shave her head tonight. You can get in touch with her at [email protected] when she’s finished.
