Coming off of its biggest win of the season last Friday against Michigan, the BG hockey team will be looking to keep momentum going strong this weekend when the Falcons travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to face Ferris State for a pair of conference games.
The Falcons (6-24-2, 4-19-1) take to the road after completing a recent five-game home stand in which they went 1-3-1, holding their own against some of the best in the CCHA (Alaska, Notre Dame and Michigan).
Hoping to build off of the recent improved play and knowing that they will go on the road in the first round of the CCHA playoffs, BG will look to solidify its road game in preparation for the postseason. The Bulldogs (9-19-3, 6-15-2), who have won three of its last four games, including a sweep of Ohio State, will be looking to do much the same.
“We know we’re going on the road in the playoffs,” said BG coach Scott Paluch. “It’s important that we can get a positive feeling on the road to get the confidence that we can put together a solid road game going into the playoffs on March 2.”
Winning on the road has been a struggle for BG this season (2-13-0), who will likely face the fifth seed in the opening round of the playoffs, with the top four teams in the conference receiving byes.
The Falcons’ nine points put them in 12th place in the conference, seven points behind Ferris State in the standings, leaving BG with a mathematical chance to surpass the Bulldogs. But whether BG finishes 11th or 12th, the team could travel to any of a number of sites to open the playoffs, including Nebraska-Omaha, Ohio State, Western Michigan and Lake Superior.
According to Paluch, the team is not paying attention to what team they might play in the first round, but rather the Falcons are concentrating on their own game to make sure they are prepared to perform at a top level come playoff time.
“We’ve got to maintain the positive vibe going right now,” Paluch said. “We’ve played well the past few weekends but we need to be comfortable that we go into a tough place to play and pull out a win.”
