The BG football team won its second straight Mid-American Conference game and became bowl eligible with a 39-32 win at Eastern Michigan Friday. “Considering less than 12 months ago we were struggling,” said BG coach Gregg Brandon of the team’s 4-8 finish in 2006. “For us to come back and get bowl eligible and win six football games right now from where we were less than a year ago is a huge credit to the kids in this program.” The Falcons played inspired at times and looked clueless at others. The offense had two series’ inside the five where it did not come out with points. The first time Anthony Turner fumbled, the second was a fourth down conversion that Freddie Barnes couldn’t hang onto. “We had some tough times and had tough errors, but we knew what we had to do and we just talked about keeping the ball moving and good things would happen for us at half time,” said quarterback Tyler Sheehan. In the second half, the Falcons scored on every possession. Punter Nick Iovinelli didn’t see the field in the game. “We didn’t have to punt all day and when you don’t have to punt all day something good is going to happen for you,” Sheehan said. The Falcons ran for 193 yards led by Sheehan’s career-high 65. There were four rushers who gained more than 40 yards. Sheehan also threw for 226 yards and a touchdown. He wasn’t surprised that his team got its running game going though. “I think we have one of the best lines in the country no doubt,” Sheehan said. “We have three great seniors that are holding it down out there.” Turner had 102 total yards, 49 rushing and 53 receiving. The early fumble was atoned for by two rushing touchdowns. For Eastern, Andy Schmitt threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more. Pierre Walker gained 155 yards and scored once. Freshman Glen Stanley led the defense with 18 tackles. The Falcons will put their MAC East title hopes on the line Saturday as they head to Buffalo for their final divisional game of the season.
