After pulling an all-nighter, State Rep. Bob Latta, has claimed a narrow victory in the Republican primary of the 5th district special election.
With all precincts reporting, unofficial results on the Ohio Secretary of State’s website showed Latta beat out his nearest rival for the nomination, State Sen. Steve Buehrer, by about 3.6 percentage points, or 2,651 votes.
Final reporting of the results from yesterday’s election was delayed until early this morning after problems with flood damaged voting machines in Putnam forced that county’s board of elections to keep its polls open an additional hour and a half.
But at around 6:45 a.m. today, Latta’s campaign manager, Matt Parker, claimed victory for his candidate.
‘We won – the results are in and we won,’ Parker said.
Buehrer’s campaign was not immediately available for comment.
Latta will now face Democratic nominee Robin Weirauch in a Dec. 11 vote to see who will replace the late congressman Paul Gillmor in the U.S. House of Representatives.
