While the Falcons went undefeated the past week against IPFW, Akron and Buffalo, one Falcon stood out above the rest. Junior Middle Blocker, Kendra Halm earned Mid-American Conference East Division player of the week honors for the second time in her career.
“I know I played well, I don’t expect anything, and we won. Obviously that’s the most important thing, extra honors are great but I don’t expect it,” Halm said.
Halm’s spectacular week began in BG’s three game victory over IPFW in which she recorded 11 kills and only committed one error for a .500 hitting percentage. In the Falcons second game of the week Halm once again led the Falcons with 11 kills and a single error in 17 attempts, leading to .588 hitting percentage.
However, against Buffalo, Halm was even more phenomenal as she recorded 13 kills on 16 attempts without any errors. Halm’s performance in the match left her just short of breaking Carey Amos’ 15-year record for hitting percentage in match at .867.
Halm finished the match with a .812 hitting percentage.
“I could sum it up with one word, phenomenal. She literally was phenomenal this past week and I don’t know that people understand volleyball is a game of mistakes,” said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. “Since she gets set quite a bit, it’s a amazing that for an entire week of competition she only had two hitting errors, that is extremely difficult to do.”
For the week, Halm had a total of 35 kills and 2 errors on 53 attempts, a spectacular .623 hitting percentage. She also recorded 10 blocks, three digs, and an assist. For Halm it was the culmination of hard work the entire season learning to work with new freshman Setter Sam Fish.
Halm’s player of the week honor added to her list of accolades which already includes an All-MAC freshman squad honor, All-MAC last season and being the team’s co-offensive player of the year last season.
Halm and the Falcons continue their home stand this weekend with a pair of matches against the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Falcons are currently 13-7 overall (4-2 in the MAC) and haven’t lost at home yet this season.
