Falcon Film Festival back for fifth year, open to all

Students looking for a cinematic experience with a local flavor can attend the Falcon Film Festival tomorrow at 6 p.m. in 101 Olscamp. University alumnus, author and media personality David Coleman, also known as the ‘Dating Doctor,’ will emcee the free event. The festival will screen eight films by University students with a theme on the Bowling Green experience.’ In the past, the Falcon Film Festival had been limited to groups of freshmen making films about their first year at college. This is the fifth year of the event and the first year the festival will be open to all University students. Cindy Fuller, communications coordinator for the Office of the CIO, said they expanded the entry requirements in order to allow for involvement of a wider audience. ‘We’ve had a number of students who did it their freshman year who came back to us and said, ‘We would really like to do this again it was a great experience.’ And we listened to that request,’ Mike Hachtel, festival co-chair, said. Films for the festival are created by teams of five members. Each film must be five to eight minutes long and contain no content that would receive higher than a ‘PG’ rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. All entries for the festival were shot and edited during the first month of spring semester.’ ‘We have 33 teams with 21 entries [this year], which is a record number,’ Hachtel said. ‘There were over 150 student participants. Those are record numbers for us. We’ve averaged in the past about 10-15 movies turned in so having 21 turned in is incredible.’ The Falcon Film Festival sees a variety of different genres, from comedy and mystery to serious drama, Hachtel said. And Fuller added this year will be the first to feature a musical. Hatchel said the festival committee has seen years of great filming but have seen an increase in the number of quality productions this year because knowledge of software has increased. ‘Not that the winning movies in the past haven’t been high quality,’ Hachtel said. ‘But there have been more high quality movies this year than there have been. I would attribute that to not just the technology but the knowledge of technology. The student’s knowledge of technology has gone up, so therefore the outcome of their product is better.’ ‘ All submitted films shown are first viewed by the Festival Steering Committee, who determines whether the films meet the required guidelines, Hachtel said. Then a panel of judges rates the films on a zero to one scale, based on seven criteria including creativity and use of technology. The festival tries tow select judges in recognizable positions from around campus. This year’s judges include Jeff Nelson, University Bookstore director and independent filmmaker Tom Hofbauer. The Falcon Film Festival is deliberately scheduled to coincide with the Academy Awards and the red carpet experience, Fuller said. Students, family members and the community can expect an enjoyable evening and gain insight into the minds of students at the University, she said. Audience members also have a chance to win prizes. ‘ ‘I think students are going to be very impressed with their peers,’ Hachtel said.
