Considering how many mistakes the Falcon football team made in Saturday evening’s game against Ohio, the outcome probably should have been worse than it was. Defensively, the Falcons missed many assignments, allowing the Bobcats to create numerous plays of more than 20 yards as they dropped the game 44-37. OU scored on plays of 37, 35 and 68 yards on offense while also returning a punt 72 yards for a touchdown. But it was Ohio’s balanced attack (216 rushing yards and 203 passing yards) that doomed the Falcons. For BG, quarterback Tyler Sheehan threw for a career-high 390 yards and two touchdowns, while also running in a score from 5 yards deep. One of those two touchdowns fell into the hands of Justus Jones for his first career score. Trailing 44-37 with 1:40 left in the game and on the OU 22 after a 54-yard punt return by Freddie Barnes, the Falcons were in good position to tie the game up. After failing to convert on first and second downs, BG gained 8 and a half yards on a Sheehan rush that put them 14 yards away from a score. After a timeout, coach Dave Clawson drew up a play to get the ball to his No. 1 playmaker Freddie Barnes instead of trying to run for the first down. Sheehan delivered an accurate pass after getting hurried by OU linebacker Noah Keller, but the ball was tipped into the air by cornerback Thad Turner. However, Barnes was in position to regain possession as it came back down but couldn’t get control as he watched it drop to the turf in the end zone. The Falcons’ next challenge will come next weekend at Kent State.
