Former Falcon football players flock to Pro Day

Scouts from 14 NFL teams were at Doyt Perry Stadium Tuesday afternoon for BG’s football Pro Day.

Fifteen former Falcons, including standout receiver Freddie Barnes, quarterback Tyler Sheehan and safety P.J. Mahone, participated in the event.

Originally scheduled to take place in the Perry Field House, the event was moved outside to the comfortable, yet windy, weather.

“We were supposed to be inside, so I didn’t think I’d have to deal with the wind,” Sheehan said. “I’ve been throwing in the wind for five years now, so it’s not too bad.”

Sheehan, who completed one of the finest quarterbacking seasons in school history in 2009, throwing for a school-record 4,051 yards and 27 touchdowns, said he drew a lot of interest from the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers have had several Mid-American Conference quarterbacks on their team the past five seasons with Ben Roethlisberger (Miami), Byron Leftwich (Marshall), Charlie Batch (Eastern Michigan) and Omar Jacobs (BGSU) all having had stints with the team.

But as a Cincinnati native, Sheehan was more excited about a chance to play for his hometown team.

“I’m a Cincinnati guy, so I have to like that a little bit,” Sheehan said.

The Bengals have scheduled an individual workout with him for April 13, and Sheehan said he should get more workout invitations.

Barnes said catching passes from his former quarterback was the same as it was during the past four seasons.

“Tyler looked great,” Barnes said. “He did real good. That’s what I always expect from Tyler.”

Mahone, who has been working with a personal trainer in Euclid since season’s end, said he did well for his first time running drills in front of scouts.

“I thought I had a pretty good day,” Mahone said.

The players were put through several drills on and off the field. They started in the Sebo Center with bench press, vertical jump and standing long jump measurements.

Later in the day, the players took to the field to be timed in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, L-drill and 60-yard shuffle. Individual times were not revealed to anyone but the scouts, not even the players.

Following those drills, scouts could request that any player perform individual drills such as route running.

The Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants and Washington Redskins also had scouts present at the Pro Day.

Other seniors from this past season at the event were safety Jahmal Brown, running back Chris Bullock, punter Nick Iovenelli, linebacker Jerett Sanderson, tight end Jimmy Scheidler, cornerback Roger Williams and receiver Chris Wright.

Players from other recent graduating classes at the Pro Day were Loren Hargrove and Dan Macon from 2007 and Kenny Lewis, Antonio Smith and Sinisa Vrvilo from 2008.

The last player from the Falcons to be drafted was Kory Lichtensteiger, who graduated in 2007 and was selected by the Denver Broncos.
