From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

The BGSU volleyball team huddles up during their 3-2 win over Northern Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at the Stroh Center.

BGSU volleyball got a taste of their own medicine at Ball State on Oct. 29. The Falcons were swept by the Cardinals 3-0.

Both teams entered the game leading their divisions. BGSU was undefeated in MAC play before this game, but is now 15-7 overall with a 11-1 conference record. Ball State is now 21-3 with a 11-1 conference record.

The Cardinals set the tone early with a 25-15 Set 1 win. BGSU would make the next two sets close, but could not get over the hump to get a set win. The Falcons lost Sets 2 and 3, 25-22 and 25-23 respectively.

For the Cardinals, junior Natalie Risi led her team with 12 kills.

For the Falcons, redshirt freshman Kat Mandly led the team with 13 kills. Senior Katelyn Meyer was close behind with 12 kills.

The attacking errors hindered the Falcons in this matchup. They had 17 attacking errors while the Cardinals had eight.

As a team, BGSU hit for .191. Ball State hit for an impressive .328.

Three Falcons did record double-digit digs. Senior Julia Walz led the team with 17. Sophomore Alex Laboy had 11 and junior Yelianiz Torres had 10.

Head coach Danijela Tomic said this loss will help grow the team.

“We are disappointed that we lost, but Ball State outplayed us in every aspect of the game and deserved to win. One loss won’t define us,” Tomic said.

The Falcons will have to refocus for their next game against Toledo on Oct. 30. The Rockets are second behind Ball State in the MAC West standings. It will be another road challenge for BGSU.
