  • Petrofiction Review: Oil on Water
Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. A specific text that focuses on petroleum culture in political economics and environmental impact. Although Habila’s novel begins with a journalist investigating a kidnapping, the […]

Nightmare seventh does in Falcons

Just when it seemed the Bowling Green baseball team would break its 19-year win drought against Notre Dame, the seventh inning hit.

The Falcons got themselves into position to win by scoring two runs in the sixth to move the score to 4-2, but it was all downhill from there as the Irish used an eight run seventh inning to roll to a 14-2 win.

“We’re just not swinging the bats well right now,” BG head coach Danny Schmitz said. “And now when we make mistakes, it gets magnified.”

The Falcons got a solid showing out of starting pitcher Adam Gumpf, who threw 4.1 innings, but the bullpen let the game get out of reach.

When the runs started coming late in the game, there weren’t enough big sticks for the Falcons to crawl back in.

“Gumpf gave us a quality outing,” Schmitz said. “Unfortunately, we’re in a funk right now swinging the bats.”

The Falcons got out hit in a landslide against the Irish. Notre Dame pounded out 20 hits while the Falcons managed just five. And it’s not just a few players that the finger can be pointed at as Irish pitcher Derik Olvey pitched six innings, allowing the Irish’s only two runs.

“I think the top part of our lineup is very important,” Schmitz said. “The guys in the one and two hole have to get on base for us. Then it is up to the three, four, five, six slots to drive them in.”

Until this game, the Falcons had looked pretty smooth in almost every aspect of the game. Their fielding has been solid this season and Burke Badenhop was coming off winning the Mid-American Conference’s pitcher of the week.

“We’ve got to get all three phases of the game working,” Schmitz said. “Our pitching has been good, the fielding has been good. We just need to start hitting the ball.”

BG has dropped three of their last five games and a big part of that has been the lack of lumber. In that span, the Falcons are hitting just .255 as a team and are giving their pitchers just 4.2 runs of support per game. This slump is coming on the heels of a six-game winning streak.

“Right now, we’re just sputtering along,” Schmitz said. “But like I told the guys, we’ve just got to take it one day at a time.”

That is the best bet for the Falcons right now.

After all, they are 20-9 on the year and this wasn’t a conference loss they experienced. They know MAC wins are where it’s at and they have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend, Schmitz said.

That is when they’ll play a three-game series against conference foe Northern Illinois.

“I told them today that’s where our focus has to be,” Schmitz said. “We’re going to Northern Illinois and that’s always a tough place to play.

First pitch is scheduled for tomorrow at 3 p.m. in DeKalb.
