It has been just two weeks since the Bowling Green women’s basketball team last met Western Michigan and a lot has changed.
Coming into their first meeting in Kalamazoo, the Falcons were the underdogs.
Now, going into tomorrow’s contest against the Broncos, it is the Falcons that are favored. BG comes into the contest with a 4-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference, while Western sits just a game behind at 3-2.
For now, the Falcons are in first place, but for BG, it still doesn’t feel like first place.
“We view ourselves as the underdogs,” BG head coach Curt Miller said. “We think of ourselves as a team that was picked to finish sixth in the MAC.”
Thus far, the Falcons have played nothing like a middle-of- the-pack MAC team.
They have taken down Western Michigan and Ball State — two teams picked to finish ahead of them in the standings. On top of that, they can add a win over Toledo at Savage Hall to their resume.
A year ago, the Falcons were in the MAC title game and returned many of the key pieces from that team. But BG still feels they have something to prove and feels far from a team full of superstars.
“This team, if you asked them to describe themselves, is blue collar,” Miller said. “They work hard and they’re an overachieving team. We know we’ve got to go out and win games.
“Our team is very confident, but by all means is not cocky.”
But they will be running into a team that has a lot to feel confident about.
They have taken down Eastern Michigan, the lone team to beat BG in the MAC and have survived injuries to star players Casey Rost and Maria Jilian.
In the absence of Rost and Jilian, the Broncos have seen two new stars step into the limelight.
Center Kelly Koerber has made the most of her chances this season. The senior is averaging 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while holding things down in the post.
Outside, the Broncos have to look no further than guard Carrie Moore, who is leading the team in scoring (16.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg).
“Moore has established herself as one of the best players in the MAC,” Miller said. “She’s gotten comfortable with being the go-to player.”
But Miller knows Western goes much further than just their top two players.
Amanda Parker stepped up in their most recent game, scoring 14 points in a loss to Kent State.
Then Brittany Tyson was the big story in their win over Eastern when she scored 16 points.
“They have a one-two punch back,” he said. “But each of the last two games, they have seen a third scorer step up.”
The Falcons will open up Saturday’s double header against Western Michigan at 3 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
