The completion of the food court in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union received mixed reviews from students.
“It’s not as great as they made it seem,” said freshman Andrea Vasilevski. “It’s very busy, and more seating is needed.”
Others were willing to sacrifice the wait for convenience
“I love it because we can bursar everything,” said junior Nicole Rutter. “The food at the Union is so much better, I practically live here.”
Tuesday’s opening of Wendy?s has brought more students to the Union, even though many were frustrated with the long wait for the opening of the burger chain.
“I was frustrated with how long the food court took to (completely) open,” said freshman Kaite Bombrys. “They’d give you a date and then they would change it. Then they’d give you another date and change that.”
“I was really excited about Wendy’s, so when it kept being delayed, I got mad,” Rutter said.
The delay in the opening of Wendy?s was due to construction and design issues and not contract negotiations, as was widely speculated.
“We needed to (also) get state approvals for new design adaptations,” said Wanda Overland, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. “The trouble we experienced was part of the trouble that goes into designing a new building.”
“It’s been one obstacle after another,” said Becky Williams, Wendy’s owner. “We’ve faced every obstacle that you could come against.”
According to Overland, Wendy’s was chosen as a result of surveys received from the students several years ago.
“Based on the feedback we received from students we feel they’ll be pleased.”
Many students agree that Wendy?s was a good choice for the University.
“The food is a bit better than everywhere else on campus, because it’s newer and fresher,” said Amanda Baumhauer. “Wendy’s was a good choice because it’s healthier.”
