  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

Tennis reaches goals for season

When men’s tennis coach Jay Harris reflected on the goals he set for the season, he was in for a surprise.

“When I looked at the goals we set, and the number of those we accomplished, it was amazing,” Harris said. “We had fourteen team goals, and we accomplished every one of them.”

Now comes a difficult task for the players, as well their head coach. The decision of where to go now. With Geoff Hiscox being the only player who has signed to go to another school (to Alabama, the 18th ranked team in the nation), Harris said that most of the underclassman on the team have “a good idea of where they’re going.”

Sophomore Joel Carney is about to sign with 19th ranked Ohio State, making it his third college in as many years, after transferring from St. Bonaventure before this season.

Junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo has his choice narrowed down to Virginia, a team that is expected to be in the top twenty of the country next year, and 12th ranked Notre Dame. Another junior, Peter Gardonyi, is the only underclassman who will remain in BG next year.

As for freshman Ian Bliss and sophomore Milos Jirout, Harris said their whereabouts are still in question.

“Ian and Milos are looking at similar schools, like Colorado, Nebraska and NC State,” Harris said. “It just shows what type of people we brought in here,” Harris said. “It also shows our ability to develop the players. If our seniors were not moving on, they would be heavily recruited.”

As for Harris, he is looking at several head coaching opportunities, including one at NC State.

“That’s a position I would be very interested in,” Harris said. “The chance to go down there and bring a couple of guys with me is very interesting to me.”

When asked what he would remember about the final men’s tennis team in BG history, Harris said he would remember more than just the wins.

“This was a team that won the right way, and they did it by putting the family first,” Harris said. “We were never satisfied the whole season, and that was a great thing.”
