Women’s soccer team sets records

The BG women’s soccer team has added to their assault on the record book, adding conference wins and points to their list of accomplishments.

The women’s soccer team went into this weekend’s games against Valparaiso and Buffalo with both confidence and hope.

The Falcons knew that while beating Valparaiso was important for momentum, a win over Buffalo would give them six conference wins, which coach Andy Richards had predicted would secure them a spot in the Mid-American Conference postseason. They got the wins they needed.

The Falcons overcame weather, being behind and questionable officiating in a 3-0 win over Valparaiso and a 2-1 overtime win over Buffalo. Britt Anderson and Samantha Meister scored once in each game.

Richards was happy with BG’s perseverance over the weekend, particularly in the win over Buffalo.

“That was one of the great performances of the season,” Richards said. “We thrived against such adversity, and you couldn’t have written a story better. Everything went against us.”

Richards said that the win over Buffalo has all but assured the Falcons a spot in the postseason, but with three regular season games left, they are not about to take it easy.

“I think we have pretty much done enough to get to postseason, but that’s not what we are about,” Richards said. “We are not about scraping through, but about being the best we can possibly be. Our destiny is in our own hands.”

Friday’s game against Valparaiso took place with a brisk wind and a cold rain falling at Cochrane Field. The Falcons responded to the conditions by scoring quickly against their non-conference opponent, as Anderson scored her second goal of the season just 1:40 into the match. Julie Trundle was credited with an assist on the goal. BG increased its lead to 2-0 at 33:11, when Katie Piening scored her first goal of the season.

The Falcons went to halftime with a 2-0 lead, but Richards said after the game that the team didn’t play as well as he had hoped in the first half.

“I didn’t think that in the first half we played particularly well,” Richards said. “I didn’t think we came in fired up enough or determined enough. We were too relaxed.”

In the second half, the goal keeping by Erika Flanders helped to put the game away, and Meister scored her third goal in as many matches. Leslie Dawley was credited with an assist on the goal, which came at 56:59. The 3-0 win gave BG an overall record of 8-6-2 on the season.

Still, Richards was somewhat disappointed.

“It’s a funny feeling when you win and you don’t feel like you played as well as you should have,” Richards said. “It’s kind of like losing when you play great. You just don’t know how to feel, but a win is a win.”

Yesterday’s game against Buffalo saw the Falcons fall behind 1-0 on a penalty kick that resulted from a disputed hand ball call against BG. Richards said that the officiating in the game was inconsistent.

“It was a physical game, and we really felt we were not given any favors by the officiating,” he said. “I would even go so far as to say they were as close to incompetent as you can get.”

Still, the Falcons pressed on, tying the game on a goal by Anderson with just 20 minutes left. In overtime, Meister scored to give the Falcons their first overtime win in close to two years.

It was the first time this season that Buffalo has lost on its home field.

The goal by Meister tied a school record of scoring goals in four consecutive games. She equaled a mark set by Tracy Gleixner in 1998 and Kristy Coppes last season.

The Falcons will now head home for two MAC games this weekend. They play a 3 p.m. game on Friday against Western Michigan, and then play a 1 p.m. game against Northern Illinois. That will conclude the team’s regular season conference schedule.
