  • Petrofiction Review: Oil on Water
Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. Culp, women fourth at EMU

Amber Culp led the way for the women runners this weekend, finishing second out of 88 runners in the womenís 5K run, with a time of 18:50. Culp finished just three seconds behind the winner, Abby Barnett of Western Michigan.

ìShe looked strong the entire time, she ran a great race,î said Coach Cami Wells.

Overall, the women finished fifth out of 11 schools that participated in the event.

ìIt was a decent finish, but we still have some work to do,î Wells said.

The top five finishers in the race consisted of Barnett (18:47), Culp (18:50), Melissa Nasers of Oakland University (18:52), Erin Stauffer of Eastern Michigan (18:57) and Meryl Marsh of Western Michigan (18:59).

Other finishers from the Falcon squad included: Nicole Suitor (35th, 20:18), Cyndi Bostdorff (36th, 20:25), Sarah Lohrbach (37th, 20:26), Kristin Spicer (41st, 20:33), Melissa Krueger (42nd, 20:34) and Leslie Carden (54th, 20:55).

Taking first place in the meet was Western Michigan, followed by host Eastern Michigan. Rounding out the top five were Wright State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Falcons.

The Falcons were without the services of Briana Killian, who was a last-minute scratch due to a bout with bronchitis. Nicola Viljoen, who is still nursing a back injury, started the race but was unable to finish due to the nagging injury. The absence of two of the squadís top runners put a burden on the rest of the squad to fill the void. Wells hopes to have both of them back to 100 percent and ready to go for next weekendís meet.

The women runners will next compete this Friday in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
