  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

Dinner raises funds

Tonight the Mileti Alumni Center and Dance Marathon will come together to raise money for Dance Marathon by serving a spaghetti dinner.

Spaghetti at Mileti will go from 5-8 p.m. at the Alumni Center. The cost is $5 per person and it is bursarable. All of the proceeds will go toward Dance Marathon.

The dinner includes spaghetti, salad, bread and a drink. The Mileti Alumni Center is located across from Harshman Quadrangle on Mercer Road.

This is the second annual Spaghetti at Mileti, and last year 60 to 70 people attended the event.

“I’ve heard great things about the dinner last year so I fully believe that this one will be even better,” Karen Gibson of the Office of Alumni Affairs said.

Gibson is the adviser of the Student Alumni Association who is sponsoring this event. Gibson said she has enjoyed watching everyone pull together to get this event going.

Dance Marathon Morale Captain Brady Bourquin said the concept of the spaghetti dinner was created when they were brainstorming for ideas to help dancers and moralers raise money last year.

“When it comes to raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network we always remind ourselves that every bit counts and makes a difference,” Bourquin said.

Bourquin said that the $5 cost gets you all you can eat and the proceeds go to a good cause.

“Five dollars is a small price to pay for the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child,” Bourquin said.

The money raised will benefit children who suffer from muscular dystrophy, birth defects, cystic fibrosis, cancer and other ailments.

Dance Marathon is 100 days away and activities like Spaghetti at Mileti will help raise the money needed.

The monetary goal set by the Dance Marathon organizational committee is $315,583 this year. The Children’s Miracle network will receive $272,000 if the goal is met. This would be more money raised than last year and will keep the tradition of giving more money each year.

“I think this event is a great opportunity to allow the campus as well as the BG community to interact and raise money to help support those involved,” Bourquin said.
