Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. A specific text that focuses on petroleum culture in political economics and environmental impact. Although Habila’s novel begins with a journalist investigating a kidnapping, the […]

Track to run split squads

Following an 11-day layoff , the Bowling Green track and field team will split their squad and travel to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Drake Relays and to Hillsdale, Mich. to compete in the Hillsdale Relays.

“I think we’re definitely ready to get going again,” head coach Scott Sehmann said. “I think we are well rested for the most part, and looking to put up our best marks of the year.”

The Falcons will regain the services of Ellen Alkire for this weekend’s competition. Alkire sat out the All-Ohio Championships while battling through a case of kidney stones.

The Falcon squad will send about nine athletes to the Drake Relays and about 20 athletes to the Hillsdale Relays. This will be the only time this season where BG will split their squad between two meets on the same weekend.

The focus of the Drake Relays will be the relay events along with the sprint medley. With the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships less than a month away, Sehmann is looking for continued improvement in the 4 X 100-meter relay team and is also looking for the right combination to run the 4 X 400-meter relay at the end of the season.

Also representing the Falcons at the Drake Relays will be Alicia Taylor in the 100-meter hurdles and Amber Culp in the steeplechase. Culp has already qualified for regionals in this event and coach Sehmann sees this weekend’s meet as “the first chance to really have some people out there to push her and hopefully bring her time down.”

In the field events, Mary Willems will represent the Falcons in the hammer throw and Kerri McClung will compete in the shot put event. Both athletes have had strong starts to the outdoor season and Sehmann is hoping to get them back to the level they were at during the Indoor Championships.

The focus at the Hillsdale Relays will be on more of the individual events. With only one meet between this weekend’s meets and the MAC Championships, Sehmann is looking for athletes to step up and show him they want to compete at the conference and regional meets.

“At this time we are shooting to really start to decide who is going to qualify to continue on and go to the conference meet…I’m really looking for some people to step up and show me that they are deserving of staying around an extra week [after classes let out] to be a part of our conference squad and in a position to maybe make a contribution on the scoreboard,” Sehmann said. The Drake Relays is a four-day event that begins today and runs through Saturday. The Hillsdale Relays is a three-day event and begins tomorrow and also finishes up Saturday.
