The Toledo Opera is determined to make this season the best they have ever had. The entire schedule is going to be announced this weekend, but many events have already been set.
“It is a dynamite season this year,” said Joe Mosier the director of marketing for the Toledo Opera.
The 2003 Opera Gala is going to focus on Opera in movies. Maestro Thomas Conlin will be leading five singers and the Toledo Symphony in performing the music from such films as “Pretty Woman” and “The Shawshank Redemption”. It is going to be held at the Peristyle on February 15.
The Oscar-winning film Amadeus about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is going to be shown at the University of Toledo’s Rocket Hall on March 23. Before the film starts there is going to be a discussion about Mozart with the audience.
To follow up the Mozart film the romantic comedy Cosi fan tutte which was written by Mozart is going to be performed at the
Valentine Theater on April 5, 11 and the 13. Cosi is sung in Italian, but English subtitles will be provided above the stage in a ongoing effort to attract more first time opera goers.
“Opera is actually experiencing growth, especially with younger children,” Mosier said. Studies done by Opera America have shown that opera is the fastest growing form of entertainment.
The usual fundraising events including the Sapphire Ball, Blame The Champagne and the Miller Lite Pizza Challenge are all going to be held this year. All of these events help raise money so the Toledo Opera can continue its productions.
