Just when you think the Falcons have had their biggest game of the season, you look ahead on the schedule and realize the games keep getting bigger.
It began with Bowling Green vs. Purdue. Then the Falcons played Ohio State. Next came the NIU game, which drew the attention of GameDay. After that was the Miami University game. Lastly, the Falcons played their arch rivals, UT.
In a 12-game season, the Falcons have had five big games. Of these five games, two have been nationally televised at Doyt Perry stadium, something that hadn’t happened in Bowling Green until this season.
In addition to the national attention the team has received this season, two of the teams that the Falcons played were from the Big Ten conference, and the Falcons even defeated one of those teams. A person could argue for hours as to which game is the biggest. However, the biggest may be yet to come.
Tonight’s game should prove to be one the biggest Falcon football games of the season and in Falcon football history. If Bowling Green defeats Miami University at Doyt Perry stadium tomorrow, then they will be guaranteed a spot in a bowl game. Bowling Green hasn’t been in a bowl game since the 1992 Las Vegas Bowl.
However, there is a downside to tomorrow night’s game —- the fact that it is on school night.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. The tailgating and hype will no doubt start much sooner.
What kind of reaction can students expect from professors? Teachers should expect lower attendance in class tomorrow due to all of the hype that the game is fueling.
It is no secret that, in the past, Bowling Green fans have been less than enthusiastic about their sports teams, especially football. The University has long desired to have higher attendance rates at football games. Well, now they have it.
However, higher attendance for weekday games could mean lower attendance rates for classes on day of the game. This poses a problem for those students whose professors have an attendance policy which normally allows for three unexcused absences.
It would have been nice to have classes cancelled, but that it is too late for that now. What we would like to see is some leniency from the professors who teach late afternoon and evening classes. Students are going to skip class to get a good seat at tomorrow’s game. So be prepared and please be lenient.
You asked for school spirit, well not you have it. Go Falcons.
