I have been taking in all the information that has been in The BG News about commuters. I have taken it in stride, but a flier on the window of the bookstore really angered me.
It essentially stated that commuters are a bunch of whiners and that the situation could be worse. I thought of a few questions that I would ask if I met up with the person who posted the flier.
Questions like: How many children do you wake up and get ready each morning? How long does it take you to get to campus each morning? How many days a week do you work to save up for your parking pass and any tickets you might have to pay?
When you are supporting a family, you know where it comes from. Commuters are a different type of people, especially us nontraditional types of students. We have all the pressures of school plus an adult grown up life. We are justified in our complaints because we actively support the campus with our own money and not our parents.
I am not trying to say that there aren’t on campus individuals who work hard or pay their own dues, but I will bet that a greater amount of the commuters do.
We pay for parking lots with lakes in the middle of them, gravel-covered lots and oversold passes. If we do not speak up, we too will have charges equivalent to the other colleges. We will hold tightly onto our pocketbooks as the college digs deeper with student fees and tuition increases. Parking spaces should not break the bank.
Thank you for your time. I did not feel that this was a personal attack , but a response to a person who wanted to slander and remain anonymous.
