Brandon catches some eyes

Sometimes being successful isn’t as easy as it looks.

While doing well all the time has its perks, there are some setbacks that come with it.

Bowling Green head football coach Gregg Brandon is finding that out right now.

He is in the midst of leading his team to their second consecutive bowl game while receiving attention from other schools interested in his coaching skills.

The only offer Brandon has received thus far was from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Telling his players about the offer was a priority for Brandon and they told him to check it out.

“I told the guys about the Vegas thing,” Brandon said. “I said that a guy called and said he wanted to pay me half a million dollars for the next five years and the guys told me I couldn’t hang up.”

Brandon didn’t take the job, but had he it would’ve increased his salary four fold. While money does play an important role in jobs for everyone including Brandon, the job took away from priority number one for him.

“I don’t coach for the money,” he said. “I coach for the fun and excitement of it.”

Coaching in Las Vegas would’ve obviously set Brandon financially, but for a coach that has a 19-6 record, there is one thing they couldn’t have offered. The Runnin’ Rebels had a 2-9 record this season and got beat handily in the process, losing by an average of 32.5 to 20.8 in the process. This has become a trend in Las Vegas. Brandon has enjoyed four years in BG while compiling a 36-12 record. In that same time UNLV had just a 17-29 record and did not make a bowl.

“You could pay me a million dollars,” Brandon said. “But if we’re getting our butts kicked it isn’t any fun.”

He had been told how great the job could be, but was still skeptical.

“People kept saying it could be a good job,” he said. “Well, why hasn’t it been a good job?”

There have been rumors about Brandon and several coaches around the nation as to where they would be next season.

With his resume, there is no reason a young coach like him shouldn’t be high on a lot of lists of schools looking for coaches.

In his two years as head coach he has coached BG to a MAC West title, the school’s first Top 25 finish, coached his team on national television eight times and soon will take his team into a second bowl game.

Brandon claims that his popularity in the coaching ranks hasn’t been his doing.

“When people are interested in me it speaks for the program,” he said.

But BG center Scott Mruczkowski knows that his coach is worth the hype he gets.

“Coach Brandon is very intelligent,” he said. “He’s so above the game and just knows how to dissect defenses.”

For Brandon, outside interferences are taking a back seat. He is more focused on and his future in BG.

“I have good players coming back and we are going to win next year,” he said. “I can be very happy her in Bowling Green.”

The next step for Brandon and the Falcons will be to Mobile, when they take on Memphis in the GMAC Bowl Dec. 22.
