Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. Falcons Blank RedHawks 1-0 in Home Finale

On a cold chilly night at Cochrane Stadium, BGSU Women’s Soccer would take advantage of their final home regular-season game, taking down the Miami-Ohio RedHawks 1-0 last night.

The Falcons started out aggressive against the RedHawks, beginning with a dozen chances, most of them coming from right-wingback Mackenzie Rueber, who would have a superb game both defensively and offensively. Rueber provided the assist from her freekick that Maya Dean was able to finish to put the Falcons up 1-0 in the 20th minute in the first half.

Miami would have a flurry of chances offensively at the end of the first half. However, the Falcon defense would stand strong with their set pieces and  defend crosses in the box very well.

One of the biggest moments came at the end of the first half, as Senior goal-keeper Lili Berg came up huge with two massive saves to prevail the win for the Falcons, stopping shot attempts from the RedHawks’ Makenna Morrison and Mercedes Schroer.

Berg and the backline for the Falcons stood strong in the second half, as Bowling Green defended Miami’s attack and Dean’s goal off a set piece in the first half would be the difference in the match.

Head Coach Jimmy Walker was beyond pleased with how his team battled and gave credit to the way his team was able to find a way to win.

“We’ve had some games where we’ve maybe been the better team but haven’t come away with a result,” Walker said. “But tonight we were able to grind out a result. Sometimes you’ve got to win ugly to win games, and we did that tonight. It wasn’t our best performance, but we found a way to win.”

The Orange and Brown now sit fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a 4-2-3 record and a 6-5-4 record overall. With the way things currently stand, the Falcons would host a MAC tournament game in the quarter-finals. Plenty of work left to do for the Falcons however as they have two remaining road games to close out the season. BG will travel to Eastern Michigan to face the Eagles on Sunday, October 23. Kick-off for the match is set for 1 p.m.
