Falcons Extend Win Streak at Home, Defeat Miami in Straight Sets

On an unusual night to play, BGSU Volleyball added another match to their home win streak, taking down the Miami RedHawks in three sets (25-15), (25-18), and (29-27).

Here’s how the match played out.

Set 1: 25-15

The first set began with steady momentum, resulting in a few nonconsecutive 3-0 runs. Soon enough with an 11-6 score, the Falcons would have seven kills in the match and take an early lead. Miami, attempting to put a long run together, would score 2-0 on the Falcons before BG would respond with a 2-0 run of their own. From there, the Falcon offense would deal some real damage with a 7-0 run, forcing a RedHawk timeout. This run would include kills from outside hitters Petra Indrova and Lauryn Hovey, along with middle blocker Alexis Mettille. After the timeout, Miami would find a second wind and add a 4-0 run of their own. With the 20-13 score, the Falcons would push towards  the 25 point mark. The set would end on a 3-0 BG run, with an ace from senior Julia Walz ending it. Hovey and outside hitter Katelyn Meyer would lead the Falcons with 4 kills each.

Set 2: 25-18

Set two would begin with an electric 7-0 run by the Falcon offense, jumpstarting their lead. With Indrova serving and scoring two aces, her teammates Hovey and outside hitter Kat Mandly would also log two kills each to gain the lead. The RedHawks would then follow up with a 6-1 run, attempting to keep BG offense at bay, resulting in a 9-6 score. The Falcons and RedHawks would take turns scoring points until Bowling Green broke away with a five point run, making the score 16-9. The RedHawks would continue to close the gap point by point, but fell short as the Falcon offense continued to gain speed, the score reaching 20-13. Bowling Green would spend the remainder of the set chipping away at the RedHawks until the Falcons took the set with a final 2-0 run. Logging fifteen kills and two aces, the Falcons extended their match lead to 2-0 with a 25-18 score.

Set 3: 29-27

The first 12 points of the third set would show a more evenly matched offense and defensive performance between the Falcons and RedHawks, with each staying within two points of the other. At 12-12, the RedHawks would start to pull away, going a 3-1 run. From here, once again, the Falcons and RedHawks would play evenly matched volleyball, staying within three points of each other. At the 22-19 mark, with Miami in the lead, Bowling Green would begin to battle back with multiple 2-0 runs. With the score all tied up 26-26, the Falcons would find one last spark, going on a 3-1 run to win the set in extra points, 29-27. Bowling Green would collect 19 kills and four aces in this set alone.

The Falcon hitting percentage would almost double the RedHawks, with the Orange and White logging 49 kills in the match. Leaders would be Meyer with 13 kills, Jaden Walz with 23 assists, and Yelianiz Torres with 14 digs.

With this win under their belt, the Falcons now hold an 8-1 record in the MAC and now have three straight sweeps at home. The Falcons will take their four-match win streak on the road to Eastern Michigan for a weekend series. First serve on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
