BGSU Baseball soars in home opener vs Purdue Fort Wayne

The Bowling Green baseball team won 8-6 against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Tuesday.

This marked their first winning streak of the season.

The Mastodons got on the board first in the first inning, scoring an unearned run on BG starter Nic Good.

The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the inning as senior infielder Nathan Rose hit a two-out triple off Mastodons starter Colin Bauer.

The triple by Rose scored sophomore outfielder Nathan Archer, who walked in the previous at bat.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Orange and Brown scored three runs to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. 

Purdue Fort Wayne tied the game in the fourth inning via a three-run home run from junior Brooks Sailors.

The Falcons gained back the lead towards the bottom of the fifth, as senior catcher Kyle Gurney scored his first home run of the season for a 5-4 lead.

Junior Anthony Tomia launched a two-run homer over the trees in left field to make it 7-4 Falcons in the bottom of the sixth.

The Orange and Brown added another run in the sixth, and OF Gavin Ganun launched a home run for a 8-4 BG lead.

The Mastodons would attempt to rally in the seventh, as junior Caileb Johnson hit a two-run home run to make it an 8-6 ballgame.

However, Purdue Fort Wayne did not score another run over the last two frames of the game.

Sophomore Connar Penrod pitched 2.1 shutout innings in relief for BG.

Penrod, who racked up three strikeouts, earned his fourth victory in six relief appearances on the season.

Junior Owen Recker finished the game for the Falcons, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out three to secure the victory.

The Falcons will continue their homestand Wednesday against Youngstown State, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
