Continual clean play by Bowling Green Hockey finally resulted in their first conference win and third win overall, as the Falcons defeated the Lake Superior State Lakers 5-3 last night.
Only eight out of the 20 players on the team did not contribute to a team point. Ryan O’Hara contributed two goals, as well as one goal performance by Gustav Stjernberg, a game-winning goal by Brett Pfoh, and then an empty net goal by Josh Nodler.
Bowling Green led in shots the entire game, leading 32-21 at the end of the game. O’Hara racked up 10 shots of his own, the next closest being Quinn Emerson with three.
Ethan Scardina scored his first point of the year with the assist provided for the goal by Stjernberg. Both he and Seth Fyten dressed for their first game, with Fyten recording only two shots, and Scardina with the assist, a shot, and was 6-9 on faceoff.
The part of the game that has eluded the Falcons so far has been the powerplay. Those woes did continue, as after a recent stretch of two goals on four powerplays, the Falcons went 0-4 tonight, taking their season total to 5-36 on five on fours.
Conversely, they have been effective in killing power plays, stopping all three opportunities last night, and 26 of them total.
Cole Moore got the start in the goal and was a major part of the penalty kill. Moore totaled 18 saves allowing three goals, 10 of those saves coming during shorthanded play.
The freshman is now 2-3 on the season with 147 saves (tied for first on the team) and only one more goal allowed than junior and last year’s starter Christian Stoever.
Stoever retained both starts against St. Thomas in the first games of the CCHA season.
Bowling Green still sits in eighth place in the CCHA, but with a win on Saturday, Bowling Green can leap to a .500 record in conference, fifth in the CCHA, and set themselves up for the Northern Michigan Wildcats on the days after Thanksgiving.
