Former BGSU men’s soccer defender Joey Akpunonu has signed with the Charleston Battery in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship.
Akpunonu, who played three seasons for the Falcons from 2020-2022, was selected by Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati in the first round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He spent two seasons with the Orange and Blue after being drafted 22nd overall, spending time with FC Cincinnati 2 and even making his MLS debut against D.C. United on June 24th, 2023, during his rookie year.
In 2024, Akpunonu went on loan to Hartford Athletic where he appeared in 15 matches, and MLS NEXT Pro Club Huntsville City FC, playing eight games.
“I’m looking forward to playing for the city and having the chance to compete for trophies,” said Akpunonu in a press release. “What drew to me to join the Battery was the style of play and how much they have been able to dominate the ball. I also know how involved the team is in the community, so that’s something that is very special. The club’s culture and locker room are great, too.”
During his time at Bowling Green, Akpunonu was a two-time All-MAC selection and BGSU Male Athlete of the Year winner in 2023. He appeared in 48 games for the Falcons (42 starts), scoring eight goals and adding three assists, playing a total of 4,034 minutes.
