On a night when BGSU women’s basketball cruised to a 91-61 victory over the Ohio Bobcats, the spotlight was on the three players for Senior Night—Amy Velasco, Erika Porter, and Lexi Fleming.
History was made as well, as the Falcons hit a school record of 18 three-pointers made in a game. Kohler led the way with six, Velasco hit five, and Fleming recorded four three-pointers for Bowling Green.
“Big senior day, important game to everybody; I think it hits a little bit different,” said head coach Fred Chmiel postgame. “We have practice players who are seniors, managers, and our three seniors who are in the starting lineup. It’s a big day to pay homage to them and make sure they go out on senior night in the right fashion, and I think we did that.”
The Falcons did indeed show up, shooting 31-for-58 on the night and dishing out 26 assists as a team.
Velasco recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and tallying 11 assists—and what a night to do it.
“It was definitely a special night…it’s just such a special place to be and I feel really blessed to come through this program,” said Velasco. “There’s been a lot of awesome girls who came before me so I feel really blessed to be a part of it.”
Fleming and Porter each had huge nights as well, each scoring 12 points. Porter also grabbed four rebounds, while Fleming had two rebounds and two steals.
“So proud of all three of them; their growth on and off the court is just phenomenal,” said assistant coach Lexxus Graham-Blincoe postgame on WBGU 88.1 FM. “Their ceiling for their future is extremely high, and I’m so happy I was here with them.
A game to spotlight the trio of Velasco, Porter and Fleming, the Falcons will return to action on Saturday against the Northern Illinois Huskies to extend their winning streak to six games.
