BGSU baseball (11-5, 4-0) won their sixth straight game on Friday afternoon, defeating Akron 7-3 on the road.
The win marks the longest winning streak for Bowling Green this season and the first time BG has won a Friday game at Akron since 2014. The victory also marks the first time the Falcons have started 4-0 in conference play in back-to-back seasons in program history.
Akron was the first of the two squads to land on the scoreboard, mashing a two-run homer off of junior two-way player DJ Newman, who was in the batting order for the first time in conference play.
While his day was done on the pitching side after that fourth-inning shot, Newman more than made up for it, taking part in a pair of back-to-back home runs sparked by sophomore catcher Garrett Wright.
With the momentum quickly flipped back over to the Orange and Brown’s side, the Falcons did not let up, scoring five unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings that would be highlighted by a single in the sixth inning by sophomore infielder Brady Birchmeier that scored two runs.
Junior right-hander Ty Roder his first win at Bowling Green, giving up one run and striking out four over 3.1 innings.
The saving grace for the Falcons, besides their big lead, was the pitching under redshirt freshman pitcher Titus Lotz and senior right-hander Connar Penrod, who came in for a combined 1.2 innings, allowing four walks and two strikeouts, slamming the door on the Zips.
Penrod earned his fourth save of the season, doubling his previous career-high from two seasons ago.
Next up, the Falcons will continue their series against Akron on Saturday, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
