The first four days of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Baseball Tournament at Crushers Stadium in Avon, Ohio, are officially complete.
The double-elimination tournament has been filled with action, crazy weather and upsets.
Here are my Falcon Four takeaways from the fourth day of the tournament:
Cinderella stories are real
Toledo is on an absolutely incredible and improbable run in Avon.
The Rockets, who entered as the fifth seed out of six teams, have won four of their five games at Crushers Stadium, defeating every team in the tournament except for Miami (OH), who defeated UT 10-4.
Overall, the Midnight Blue and Gold have finished this season on an absolute tear, winning nine of their last 10 games.
Toledo’s pitching depth has been a major strength, as the Rockets have shown why they ended the regular season with the best staff in the conference.
However, their hitting, which was one of the worst in the MAC all year long, has woken up and performed in every game, which has been game-changing for Toledo.
While the Rockets have proved Cinderella stories are real, the question remains: can they finish the tournament with a storybook fairytale ending?
Miami (OH) is the best team in the conference
I’ll admit that I was not high on Miami coming into the tournament. Before going to Avon, I believed that Kent State and Ball State were the two best teams in the MAC in that order.
However, the RedHawks have proved me wrong.
Miami has absolutely dominated in Avon.
After receiving a first-round bye as the top seed, Miami defeated Toledo 10-4 and Kent State 6-1.
MU’s pitching has been the most impressive part, as the RedHawks have only used three pitchers in the entire tournament.
Junior left-handers Hayden Cutherberton and Carson Byers tossed 6.0 innings and 3.0 innings, respectively, against Toledo before the MAC Pitcher of the Year, redshirt sophomore right-hander Cooper Katskee pitched a one-run shutout against the Golden Flashes.
Miami is in prime position to hoist the trophy on Sunday and punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
Hayden Jatczak proved why he is the best player in the MAC
I thought it was a fairly close MAC Player of the Year race between Kent State’s Hayden Jatczak and Bowling Green’s Garrett Wright.
While I thought Jatczak had the edge in regular season stats, he proved why he deserved the award with his performance in Avon.
The graduate student utility player launched two home runs and drove in three runs in his three games in the tournament.
However, it was a shame that Kent State’s season ended with Jatczak in the batter’s box against Toledo.
Ball State’s season ended in disappointment
Looking at how the Cardinal’s season ended compared to what was projected in the preseason, Ball State’s season feels like a disappointment.
BSU was the named the favorite to win the MAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, earning five of the 11 votes to win the tournament.
The Cardinals were also atop the MAC standings for much of the season, as all appeared to be going well and according to plan.
But Ball State’s season ended in a tailspin. The Cardinals only won five of their last 14 games of the regular season, choking away the regular season championship and losing back-to-back games in Avon on Friday and Saturday to get eliminated from the conference tournament.
Ball State’s program is still in a very healthy position; however, after reaching the MAC Tournament Championship last year, this season feels underwhelming.
