BGSU baseball junior two-way star DJ Newman announced he is transferring to Tennessee in an Instagram post on Sunday afternoon.
The right-handed pitcher and outfielder will have one year of eligibility remaining. He committed to the Volunteers after a visit over the weekend.
Newman rejoins fellow former Falcon Garrett Wright, who transferred to Tennessee on June 15.
Newman hit .388 with 20 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, 64 RBIs, 55 walks and 75 strikeouts in 101 games and 89 starts over his three years at BGSU. He also tallied a 7-4 record, a .3.60 ERA, 91 strikeouts, just 19 walks and a .248 opponent batting average across 85 innings pitched, 27 appearances and 15 starts.
The Archbold, Ohio, native hit .419 with nine doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs in 25 games in 2025 before injuries cut his season short. His batting average is fourth all-time in BGSU single-season history for players with 50-100 at-bats in a season. On the mound, he had a 3.77 ERA with 16 strikeouts and only four walks in 14.1 innings across four starts.
Newman earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC), MAC Pitcher of the Year and four freshman All-American team honors in 2023 before earning Second Team All-MAC honors in 2024.
Newman played against Tennessee in three games in 2024. He went 2-9 at the dish with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk and four strikeouts. He also gave up five runs, including four earned, four hits, including two home runs and two walks, while striking out five batters in four innings during his lone start on the mound against the Volunteers.
