The BG track and field team begins its outdoor season with the Early Bird Relays at the University of Cincinnati on Saturday, March 16.
The Falcons finished its indoor season on a strong note a few weeks ago at the indoor Mid-American Championships. With two weeks of training under their belt to prepare for the outdoor season, the Falcons will look to be rested for Saturday’s meet.
“We have come out of the indoor season fairly healthy and our training has gone very well,” said coach Lou Snelling. “It has been nice to just focus on our fitness without interruptions.”
BG will be adding a few more athletes to the roster for this outdoor season as they come off of their redshirted status from the indoor season. One athlete who will make a big difference will be Janette Pettigrew, who has shown improvement in her first place finish during the indoor season.
“[Janette] has already made a pretty good resume for herself,” Snelling said. “She is ready to make an impact in the conference.”
The 4×400 relay looks to continue their momentum after they broke the school record in the MAC Championships a few weeks ago.
Thrower Brooke Pleger looks to continue her growth as well as she moves from the weight throw to the hammer throw.
“Brooke made great strides this year and she is even better at the hammer,” Snelling said. “We need to keep making strides as a team each week.”
The field events will begin at 9 a.m. and the running events will begin at noon Saturday.
“We just want a solid start, make good steps and keep our fitness up for the season,” Snelling said. “We also need to continue doing the right things before and after we step on the track.”
