The Falcons fell short of a victory yesterday and failed to reach the American Collegiate Championship game on Saturday with a 46-11 semifinal loss to Kutztown.
The scoring started early with a Kutztown try within the first five minutes. The Falcons respond with two penalty kicks to make the score 6-5 before the 20 minute mark.
BG added to their total with a quick try by scrum-half Mike Powell, making the score 11-5. Kutztown’s fly-half responded with a try of his own pulling the Golden Bears within a point of the Falcons. Before the half ended the Falcons attempted and missed two penalty kicks from more than 40 meters out.
Kutztown came out strong in the second half with a penalty kick and another try to give them the 18-11 lead.
The Falcons struggled trying to stop the Golden Bears from scoring allowing Kutztown to put 28 more points on the board before the game was over. Kutztown’s defense proved to be too strong for the Falcons as BG failed to get any points in the second half. The Falcons also hurt themselves by allowing penalties to stifle their offense.
The match ended with a final score of 46-11 in favor of Kutztown. The Golden Bears will advance to the National Championship game to take on the Penn State University Nittany Lions, while the Falcons’ season ended with the loss.
“BG is an excellent side and played very well throughout the match,” Kutztown coach Doc Jones said. “The final score is not indicative of their skill and how well they played.”
BG finished this year with an undefeated regular season and secured their 32nd straight MAC Championship title.
