WBGU-FM, the University’s student radio station, has been nominated for three broadcasting awards this year.
The National Student Production Awards, handed out by College Broadcasters, Inc., nominated “Aviation with Farba” for their best feature category.
University student Robert Lino recorded a personal interview piece centered on an aviation student for a class that was featured on WBGU-FM’s college radio day, which showcases student radio pieces and programs.
“People are really excited about it,” said Rebecca Priebe, general student manager of WBGU-FM. “[Aviation with Farba] is getting such great recognition, I think people are really excited about how well [Lino] put the piece together, and how well that it actually turned out.”
In addition to Lino’s feature, the station is nominated for two Radio Star awards.
Dirty Glitter, hosted by Brody Ramone, is nominated for best music show after Ramone got the opporunity to broadcast from Sweden.
“It was a really great time,” Priebe said. “We won an HD license from that contest.”
Nick Rybak, host of WBGU-FM program “How About Some Hardcore,” said he was impressed at the nomination.
“It’s really cool that someone from here is able to do that,” Rybak said.
Rybak said other DJs were similarly excited about Ramone’s nomination.
The Afternoon Rush, which features University news, sports and music, is nominated for Radio Star’s best variety show award.
Junior Tom Wade, who regularly listens to the station, said he is excited that the University radio station is receiving recognition.
“I think it’s well deserved,” Wade said. “I’m proud to be a fan of the station.”
The station, which features largely local and unsigned acts, provides students with a place to hear music they may not be able to hear anywhere else.
“It’s spontaneous,” Wade said. “It adds diversity to radio programming.”
Wade also said it is fun to hear fellow students broadcasting content.
In addition to broadcasting, WBGU-FM is involved in campus life. They put on live concerts called “Live Wire,” which provide exposure to local and national bands.
“[Live Wire] has been gaining the momentum we’ve been hoping it would gain,” Priebe said. “We’ve put it on the first Thursday of every month, so that’s really cool.”
The station also put on a 5K in conjunction with the Wood County Humane Society, as well as providing DJs for University events like campus fest, Priebe said.
“That gets us out there in the community,” Priebe said.
Priebe went on to highlight WBGU-FM’s DJ training night.
“That is probably the most exciting night of the year,” Priebe said. “Our training lets students get FCC licensed, which looks good on a resume even if you’re not in telecommunications.”
