The Falcons showed the fans what they are capable of bringing to the court this season in an 87-60 victory over Malone.
First is a physical presence down low in the paint. The Falcons outscored Malone 50-16 in points in the paint. They were led by 6’10” senior Cameron Black, who had 12 point in 26 minutes and fell just one rebound shy of a double double. Richaun Holmes looked sharp on both sides of the ball. During the game, Holmes had 16 points, 5 rebounds and had three blocks.
Five Falcons were in double digits in the scoring column. Anthony Henderson led the scoring with 17 points on 7-14 shooting. Henderson spiked off his night when Jehvon Clarke threw Henderson an alley oop, which doubled Malone’s score 60-30.
“It’s all about staying confident,” Henderson said.
Spencer Parker also provided a spark off of the bench with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
The Falcons were solid at all ends of the court on Saturday. BG forced Malone to take tough shots, which resulted them to 4-28 shooting on the 3-point line. Bowling Green shot 53 percent on the floor and had 23 assists to 14 turnovers. Jehvon Clarke had 10 assists to just 1 turnover.
“Jehvon was the engine; he had good vision and pace,” coach Louis Orr said.
Freshmen JD Tisdale, Garrett Mayleben, and sophomore transfer Josh Gomez had their first action in a Falcon uniform on Saturday. The depth of the Falcons helped wear down the Pioneers. The Falcons out rebounded Malone 49-29, and allowed just 6-second chance points. BG was vocal and switched often on screens, which helped set the defensive tone early.
Malone struggled to get anything going, but senior guard Isiah Elliott was a one-man show. Elliott led the Pioneers in points, rebounds, and assists. Despite Elliott’s efforts, Malone shot just 28 percent from the floor. Malone had 15 turnovers, which lead to 22 fast break points for the Falcons. In the first half Malone was held without a field goal for 11 minutes, where Bowling Green went on a 23-3 run.
The Falcons’ regular season will begin this upcoming Saturday at 2 p.m. against Earlham College.
