  • My Fiction Icks
By Jay Grummel When you read as much as I do you start to notice common things in fiction that make you annoyed, upset  or even want to put down the book completely. I have a bad habit of not giving books much of a chance when they use some of these personal ‘icks’. However, […]
  • Poetry for Fall
By Jay Grummel Poetry has a way of connecting us to the external and internal world. In poetry it is easier to feel a season and truly feel a piece due to this. Poetry has a subtle way of making the readers immersed into the world of the poem. With the air getting colder and […]

Manning and Romo standout, Jones out for season

This weekend’s game of the week included the Denver Broncos (5-0) facing off against the Dallas Cowboys (2-3).

The high scoring affair went down until the final drive where Peyton Manning lead the Broncos to make a game winning field goal. Manning threw for 414 yards and four touchdowns in the 51-48 victory. Tight end Julius Thomas had nine receptions for 93 yards, and a touchdown. Thomas is now tied for second in the league with six receiving touchdowns only behind his teammate Wes Welker, who has seven.

Tony Romo threw for 506 yards, and five touchdowns, but threw a bad interception with two minutes to go in the game, which lead to Matt Praters game winning field goal. Terrance Williams, Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten each had over 120 receiving yards in the loss.

The New York Jets (3-2) upset the Atlanta Falcons (1-4) with a game winning drive led by Geno Smith. Smith, the rookie out of West Virginia, was efficient and took what the defense gave him. He was 16-20 for 199 yards, and three touchdowns.

This was the first game of the season where Smith didn’t have a turnover as well. Falcons fans might have been bothered by the loss to the Jets, but they might have a bigger problem on their plate now. Wide receiver, Julio Jones, who has a league-leading 41 receptions for 580 yards, injured his foot against the Jets and could likely be out for the remainder of the season.

Another game where there were plenty of fantasy football players was the (3-2) Chicago Bears vs. the (5-0) New Orleans Saints. The Saints looked unstoppable at Soldier Field where Drew Brees threw for 288 yards, and two touchdowns. Saints running back Pierre Thomas had 94 combined yards of offense and two receiving touchdowns. Jimmy Graham ongoing success included double-digit receptions and 135 receiving yards. This was the second time this season where Graham had 10 receptions.

Although the Bears lost, Jay Cutler threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns. Cutler’s main target was Alshon Jeffery who set a franchise record in receiving yards with 218, and also had a touchdown.

The Cleveland Browns are now above above five hundred for the first time since Week 3 of the 2011 season. In a thrilling 37-24 action packed Thursday night football game vs. the Buffalo Bills, the Browns displayed touchdowns on all three sides of the ball; special teams, defense, and offense.

However, Brian Hoyer who was 3-0 as a starter was lost for the season with a complete ACL tear in his right knee. Running back Willis McGahee wore down the Bills defense rushing for 72 yards, and his first score of the season.

Josh Gordon didn’t let the trade rumors affect his playing vs. the Bills, where Gordon had 86 receiving yards on four receptions, and a 37-yard touchdown.

The (3-2) Browns, tied for first place in the AFC North will take on the Detroit Lions this upcoming week.
