The next time students go to Cedar Point to ride the attractions, they may end up riding the best roller coaster in the world.
Cedar Point’s ride, Millennium Force, won a Gold Ticket Award for the best steel roller coaster in the world for the third consecutive year.
Millennium Force followed in the footsteps of Magnum, which broke the 200 foot threshold in 1989. Millennium Force has been around since 2000 and has been ranked in the top two for the Gold Ticket Award since then.
This really has launched “coaster roars as we know them today,” said Annie Zelm, Cedar Point’s public relations consultant.
“I think for a lot of people, the height, thrill and speed are all determining factors for this nomination,” Zelm said. “It was the very first roller coaster in the world to top 300 feet, which is another main reason people like it so much.”
The Gold Ticket Award is determined by poll poster enthusiasts, people who travel around the world and ride hundreds of roller coasters year after year in order to determine what ride deserves the award.
“I think this is a real testament to the dedicated staff Cedar Point has,” Zelm said.
The roller coaster takes riders to the top of a hill overseeing Lake Erie as well as the rest of the amusement park, then it drops down at a 90 degree angle where the riders will experience other twists, turns, tunnels and hills for two and half minutes.
The ride reaches speeds more that 90 mph.
“This ride is at the top of the list for people to come visit the park, along with the Dragster, Maverick, Magnum and Gate Keeper,” Zelm said. “Cedar Point has been recognized for the Gold Ticket Award since 1998, which really says something.”
