Students wearing orange and brown on Friday have the chance at winning a pair of sunglasses or $10,000 for the University.
The $10,000 students can win Friday goes to the University’s general scholarship fund from College Colors Day.
Alex Solis, Undergraduate Student Government president, believes College Colors Day will help get students hyped about school spirit.
“It’s all about wearing the colors on Friday,” Solis said. “It matches up with our Falcon Friday, which is the spirit initiative on campus. It is a good push to get people involved.”
College Colors Day is a spirit day sponsored by the Collegiate Licensing Company. Universities can sign up to be part of the day and then students can vote for their school every day until Friday.
“[College Colors] is a university, school pride initiative,” Solis said.
Solis, along with the University’s athletic department, has been using social media to get the word out about College Colors Day.
Other groups on campus, like the Panhellenic Council, have been getting involved and getting the word out about College Colors Day. Fraternity and sorority leaders have been reminding their chapters about College Colors Day and getting their chapters ready to participate.
“Individual student leaders have been getting the word out,” Solis said.
Students and alumni can vote for the University to win the $10,000 for the general scholarship fund once a day until Aug. 30 using Facebook, Solis said.
“You can be more interactive with fans, change your cover photo and profile picture. You can take polls and give feedback … [It’s] more engaging for fans,” he said.
The University is currently ranked 15 in the nation.
“If our ranking in the country is any indication … [I am] very positive about the number of people that will participate,” said Mary Ellen Gillespie, associate athletic director.
While athletics has been advertising through social media — SIC SIC and Freddie and Frieda advertised on University Lawn, where freshmen were eating lunch Sunday, Solis said.
To further advertise, the athletics department plans on using the video board at the football game Thursday night.
Solis believes the timing of the football game and College Colors Days works out well for the University in the end.
“Usually colleges play football on Friday, which is the day of College Colors … having the football game the day before gets students pumped to wear our colors and support the school,” Solis said.
Gillespie further said the athletics department will put the website where students can read about College Colors Day on the big screen at the game. That way students can access the website right from their phones.
