In fall 2013, students will be able to register to live within a gender-neutral community at the University.
The community, which will be located in Founders Residence Hall, will allow students to live with students of the opposite sex.
Director of Residence Life Sarah Waters made the official announcement at the Resident Student Association’s meeting Tuesday night.
“We’re very happy to see this come together,” Waters said. “It’s a big milestone for the University.”
In its first year, the program will take place on campus on a somewhat trial basis, she said.
The gender-neutral community will function similar to current learning communities but will be more “thematic” in nature, rather than identifying it with a certain school or college, Waters said.
Returning students will be able to apply to live in the community, freshmen will not be able to specifically apply to live in the new gender-neutral community, she said.
The soon to be community is the result of a number of groups including RSA, Residence Life and the LGBT community working together, Waters said.
“I knew this was the year we wanted to get this done,” Waters said. “It was really a team year.”
