With the weather getting colder, many students are bundling up with hats, gloves and scarves to stay warm.
Scarves are not only used to keep warm during the winter months, but have also become a popular fashion accessory.
“In the last few years they have become more of a statement piece,” Morgan Grilliot, apparel merchandising and product development student said. “It gives the eye something to focus on close to the neck which then draws the eye to the face. Scarves are being worn in bright colors with interesting knit detail and have become oversized, which makes them a statement piece.”
Although scarves are worn for different reasons, infinity scarves have become a growing fashion.
“Infinity scarves are a new trend accessory item that offers lots of styling options and easy to wear,” said, Diane Frey, an apparel merchandising and product development associate professor. “The infinity name gives the scarf more appeal. It is a way to add personal expression to your look.”
Infinity scarves are not just for women. Frey said both men and women wear them.
A survey of students from the fashion forecasting class in the AMPD program revealed that 98 percent of students have purchased at least one infinity scarf, Frey said.
Sophomore Marissa Stambol said infinity scarves are a great winter accessory for the Bowling Green weather.
“With the wind here there isn’t a way for them to fly off,” Stambol said. “I like that you can keep warm and still look great,”
Grilliot also agreed that infinity scarves are great for the winter weather.
“Since the weather is starting to get colder, the trend for infinity scarves has become very popular,” Grilliot said. “The infinity scarf makes it easier to wrap around the neck and is perfect for college students who are on the go.”
Not only are the scarves fashionable, but they’re cheap.
Amy Craft Ahrens, owner of the local fashion boutique For Keeps, said scarves are inexpensive and can be worn during all seasons.
“It’s so easy to change an outfit without spending a lot of money,” Ahrens said. “There are cozy scarves for winter and light scarves for summer.”
The scarves Ahrens sells at For Keeps range from $2.99 to $29.99.
Students can also save money by making their own infinity scarves from old shirts that they no longer wear.
“One of the really cool things I have learned about infinity scarves is that you can make your own by cutting an old shirt right below the arm holes,” said, Sydney Boeddeker, a sophomore. “The shirt instantly becomes a scarf.”
