The BG softball team will travel to Baltimore this weekend to compete in the UMBC Spring Classic Tournament.
This is the last regular season tournament that they will play this year.
The Falcons will play four games against three different teams, all of whom are the programs first matchups against those teams. Mount Saint Mary’s and Sacred Hart both have records over .410 while the University of Maryland at Baltimore has a record over .730, making this one of the toughest tournaments yet.
The Falcons will attempt to rebound from a tough spring break, as they drop their last tournament winning one of the five games, while splitting their meetings with North Florida 1-1.
Junior Jamie Kertes and sophomore Braiden Dillow have both been pitching well as of late. Kertes had a .78 ERA in 18 innings last week while posting a 1.56 ERA in 7 appearances and now has a 3-4 record this year.
However, their pitching performances will not be enough. The team will look to fix issues at the plate which seemed to be the x-factor to the losses in Florida last week. The falcons scored 0 runs in each of their 5 losses during the break.
Senior Kaite Yoho and freshman Chelsea Raker will look to carry their productivity on offense this weekend to spark the rest of the team. Yoho is on a 6-game hitting streak batting an average of .350.
Raker is batting an average of .310 which leads all freshmen. She also leads the team in runs scored at 6.
The team will have their work cut out for them against University of Maryland at Baltimore and their starting pitcher Jessica Holte.
Holte currently holds a record of 11-1 and has a 1.78 ERA. She has also struck out 36 batters during the season and the team has struck out a total of 75 in 12 games. Her relief, Kelly Lane, has an ERA of 3.80.
The Falcons will face Mount Saint Mary’s twice on Friday before finishing up against Sacred Heart and University of Maryland at Baltimore Saturday. They will look to finish strong before conference play begins next week.
