The University has extended the use of BG Bucks to a local off-campus business.
The new CVS Pharmacy in downtown Bowling Green is accepting students with BG Bucks on their student ID cards.
CVS store manager, Doug Greek, said that most stores in college towns allow students to use their student card as a way of funding their purchases.
“Our stores have always connected with the University in town to give students the opportunity to use their campus cards,” he said.
The money under the BG Bucks section functions as a debit card for students. They can put money on it and use it anywhere on campus, and at select off-campus locations like CVS.
Some students are excited about the new building of CVS and that they are now accepting BG Bucks as a form of payment. Junior Leslie Potts says that it’s a good idea for emergency purposes.
“If I leave my debit card at home or am running low in my back account I know I have my BG1 card as a backup now,” she said.
With the initiation of BG Bucks at the downtown location, Greek said that the amount of business has begun to increase.
“The benefit of the policy is that we have seen more students come into the store,” he said.
There are other store locations in Bowling Green that also take students’ BG1 Bucks including Jimmy John’s and Qdoba. Sophomore Danielle Reddick thinks that there are more stores in the city that should take students cards.
“I think that Chipotle and Buffalo Wild Wings should take BG1 cards. Those are two of my favorite restaurants,” Reddick said.
There are restrictions with the use of the BG1 cards at CVS, Greek said.
“Students are not allowed to buy beer or alcohol with their cards,” he said. “There is a restriction with the BG1 card services.”
The store is enjoying the influx of students as a result of their new project. Greek said the store may possibly come up with more student-based initiatives this summer to draw in more customers.
