On Monday the Bowling Green men’s basketball team named former West Alabama head coach Mark Downey as the newest addition to their coaching staff. Downey was appointed by new head coach Chris Jans in the 2014-15 season.
Before Downey arrived at West Alabama he earned two Gulf South Conference championships while at Arkansas Tech and was six-time coach of the year in 10 seasons.
During his one-year stay at Western Alabama, Downey compiled an overall record of 17-11 and led the Tigers to the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, according to a press release on the Bowling Green athletic website.
Overall as a head coach, Downey has a record of 204-103 and has coached over 30 all-conference players. Out of all the players that Downey has coached, 95 percent of his student athletes who have played under him have graduated. Also, 40 of Downey’s former players have played professional basketball after college as well as coached, according to the Bowling Green athletic website.
Downey has been head coach at West Alabama, Charleston, Arkansas Tech and Independence Community College. Downey has averaged 20 wins per season, and has acquired just one losing season during his career.
Downey’s most recent assistant coaching position was in 2006 for the University of New Orleans, where he spent five seasons. He has also assisted at Independence Community College, Marshall, and Barton College.
Not only has Downey been a coach, but he also played collegiate basketball for the University of Charleston and Wheeling Jesuit. While at Wheeling Jesuit he earned all-conference performer. At St. Francis High School, Downey led all prep scores in West Virginia with 37.9 points per game in 1989-90.
