A gas line was struck today near the intersection of Manville Avenue and East Wooster Street, causing surrounding businesses to be evacuated.
The line was struck by excavators at 12:47 p.m. said Tom Sanderson, captain of the city fire division.
Businesses including the Student Book Exchange and Pita Pit were evacuated. The buildings were then checked for dangerous levels of gasses, but were found to be safe.
Apartments surrounding the businesses were to be evacuated, but Sanderson said there was “nobody home.”
Columbia Gas came to the scene at 1:10 p.m. to fix the gas line. Sanderson said the situation is now under control and the line will be fixed today.
