BG swim and dive team finishes third at MAC championships

For the third year in a row, the Bowling Green State University swim and dive team finished third in MAC Championships.

Akron defending their MAC title, coming in first, while Eastern Michigan placed second. Buffalo grabbed fourth, followed by Miami, Ohio, Toledo and Ball State.

The Falcons earned 507 total points, just 48 points behind EMU, with no divers present in the competition. Bowling Green has increased their total points for the past three seasons at MACs, despite consecutively finishing in third place.

It was a four-day competition; unlike any other meet the Falcons have seen this year with prelims beginning in the morning and championships starting in the evening.

The team ended Wednesday night tied for fourth place, after the 200 medley relay team grabbed fourth overall and the 800 freestyle relay finished in third.

Thursday saw records break despite the Falcons dropping into fifth.

Franziska Wohlert grabbed sixth place in the 200 individual medley, breaking a BGSU record with a time of 2:01.83.

Sophomore Victoria Griffin placed third and broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle, a race she had success with in the regular season.

On Friday, the Falcons jumped up to second place, trailing the Zips by less than 90 points.

Tara Capouch became the third fastest swimmer in Bowling Green history in the 200 freestyle, and the second fastest in the MAC.

Victoria Griffin hit the wall for fifth, while teammate Hannah Newman snagged sixth.

Daniela Carrillo and Kristin Filby swam NCAA B cut qualifying times in the 100 breaststroke, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Continuing with the NCAA B cuts, Estela Davis grabbed two of her own in the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley.

On the last day of MACs, the Falcons couldn’t catch up with Akron, and fell behind Eastern Michigan.

Capouch broke another school record, the longest standing in Bowling Green history, during the 1650 freestyle. Capouch swam the first 1000 yards in just under 10:09, breaking the record for the 1000 freestyle.

Griffin swam in for second place on the podium in the 100 freestyle, earning herself an NCAA B cut qualifying time.

Bowling Green was ahead of Eastern Michigan going into the 3-meter diving, but with no divers present, the Falcons fell into third place.

The Falcons earned 31 more points than last year, and 40 more than 2013.
