This year marked the 124th annual French Open in Paris, France. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles final matches took place June 6 and 7, depending on the event.
The French Open Men’s Singles final took place June 7 between Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka.
Thousands watched as Wawrinka, the player who created a surprising upset against Rafael Nadal during last year’s Australian Open, managed to surprise his fans one more time by topping Djokovic, the number one tennis player in the world.
Wawrinka topped Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the final match.
Wawrinka was ranked number four in the world before the upset during the finals match Sunday. In winning the 2015 French Open for Men’s Singles, Wawrinka managed to claim his second major title.
“I knew Stan could beat anyone here but even though, to accomplish two weeks like this, it’s something incredible,” Severin Luthi, Swiss Davis Cup captain, told reporters at CNN.
The Women’s Doubles final also took place Sunday in Paris between Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova/America’s Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Australia’s Casey Dellacqua/Russia’s Yaroslava Shvedova.
Safarova, who had just lost the championship match to Serena Williams at Roland Garros the day before, and Mattek-Sands teamed up to earn the title of the 2015 Women’s Doubles French Open with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.
The tennis duo began playing together this year. With their win. they became the seventh pair of women tennis players in the Open era to win both the Australian Open and at Roland Garros within the same year.
The Men’s Doubles final match took place between the first and third seeded teams on Saturday, June 6.
The top seeded duo, America’s twins, Bob and Mike Bryan took on the third seeded duo of Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo in a match that ended in an upset of ranks.
The Bryan twins were looking to take home the title of the French Open Championship for the third time and extend their Grand Slam record to 17 titles before the 7-6, 6-7, 5-7 loss.
The 2015 French Open Women’s Singles took place Saturday between America’s Serena Williams and Czech Republic’s Luci Safarova.
Williams managed to defeat Safarova 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the match, allowing herself to claim her 20th major title. Williams is ranked number one in the world and has claimed several titles, including five Wimbledon titles since the start of her career. She is also the three-time defending champion of the U.S. Open which will take place later this year in August.
