University graduate Alex “A.D.” Davis has managed to use his passion for music and radio to land himself a weekend spot at Toledo radio station The Juice 107.3.
Every Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., he hosts a radio show on the hip-hop radio station.
Before getting involved with radio, Davis said he always had a love for music and used to rap. He was also featured on BET’s “106 and Park” in a segment called Freestyle Friday.
“I wanted to be in the entertainment industry,” Davis said. “If I didn’t make it with my own music, I’m going to go to radio.”
All four years of his college career, he worked at WFAL Falcon Radio and WBGU 88.1 FM as a personality, spending one year as program director for WFAL.
In addition to working for the campus stations, he also interned at two Toledo stations, The Juice FM 107.3 and Hot 97.3, where he said his passion for radio developed, he said.
“My overall dedication and love for radio has developed over the course of the past three years,” Davis said.
While interning at the two stations, he met people who, he said, influenced his love and passion for radio.
When he interned at Hot 97.3, he met personality Bigg Eddie Bauer and at The Juice, his internship coordinator was personality Tisha Lee.
“They are both definitely influences on me, but with that in mind, I’m still my own personality; I don’t try to copy anyone at all,” Davis said. “Just watching them do what they do made me see where I could take it and made me love it more myself.”
Both Lee and Bauer said Davis’ passion for radio set him apart from other interns.
Bauer said he remembers Davis’ willingness to learn during his internship at Hot 97.3.
“He soaks stuff up like a sponge,” Bauer said. “Sometimes you’ll get somebody in there that’s just there to be around the industry; you can tell he was dedicated to honing his craft and actually getting in the game.”
During his internship, Davis would sit in on Bauer’s radio shows.
Bauer said he remembers making a guest appearance for one of Davis’ University radio shows.
“You could tell that he was interested and had the fire, all he needed was the opportunity,” Bauer said. “So I think it’s cool that he got the opportunity to get on the station after he graduated.”
After interning at both stations, Davis contacted The Juice before graduating, letting them know he would be graduating soon.
Lee said after hearing some of Davis’ work, he was invited back to the station and then given a spot on air.
She also said his passion is what makes him marketable.
“He is excited about radio and that’s what makes him so good on air,” she said. “He brings a young, fresh energy to the station and is very creative. He has so much potential, he has great ideas, a great voice and he is pretty fun to be around.”
After starting his weekend spot about two months ago, Davis said his favorite part is the creative freedom he has.
“I can pretty much make my show however I want to make it,” Davis said. “I can play what I want to play for the most part, as long as it is in the system. I can talk about, for the most part, whatever I want to talk about and have callers.”
Davis said creativity is one of the best parts of his job.
“My favorite part would be the freedom and the fact that I am doing what I love and I can hear myself talk,” Davis said.
