Sweetest Day for friends, loved ones

Unlike Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day is a day to remember and celebrate loved ones—not just significant others.

The holiday will fall this Saturday and some people said they don’t know why it is celebrated.

“It [Sweetest Day] was started by a dentist down in southern Ohio; he felt everybody else had a day to recognize them like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day,” said Maryann Gibson, owner of the Flower Basket. “He felt that there needed to be another day where people that are special in your life were recognized just for being special and sweet.”

Sweetest Day is different from Valentine’s Day in a way because it is a regional holiday whereas Valentine’s Day is national, Gibson said.

With Sweetest Day being a regional holiday, there is less demand for flowers, which does not cause an increase in the prices of flowers unlike Valentine’s Day, Gibson said.

Freshman Mallory Nagy said she won’t be celebrating because she doesn’t have a “sweetie.”

However, University Popular Culture Professor Matt Donahue said Sweetest Day is related to family and friends, not romantic partners.

“Sweetest Day is in no way connected to Valentine’s Day, with the exception of the ritual of giving a gift or a card,” Donahue said. “Valentine’s Day is a celebration between romantic partners; Sweetest Day is related to a connection to friends, family etc.,” Donahue said.

There are gift options in Bowling Green for students who decide to celebrate Sweetest Day, including the Flower Basket, Cookie Jar, Klotz and Little Miss Cupcakes.

The Flower Basket offers three specials for Sweetest Day, Gibson said.

“We have one called ‘Bright Smiles;’ it’s gerbera daisies,” she said.

The daisies come in multiple colors, Gibson said.

The second special is called “So Sweet,” which includes a white basket with fresh daisies and two candy bars, she said.

The third is “Soda Shop.”

“We have another one called ‘Soda Shop,’ and is done in an ice cream sundae container with an ice cream scoop and it’s a fresh slower bouquet that looks like an ice cream soda, even has a cherry on it,” Gibson said.

Along with the Flower Basket, Klotz also offers specials on flower arrangements.

“We offer specials, of course, with fresh flowers because that’s our specialty, but we can add with those plush animals, teddy bears or we can add candy since Sweetest Day does kind of have a connotation of ‘sweet’ and ‘candy,’” said Rita Klotz, owner of Klotz.

The Cookie Jar also offers specials along with their free delivery, said owner Mareen Lanigan.

“We’re promoting a hot cookie delivery, we decorate the boxes, and for Sweetest Day we will be adding ribbon a well and that’s with their message of their choice,” Lanigan said.

For the hot cookie special, the Cookie Jar, is also offering free milk, she said.

The prices for the hot cookies are in between $10 and $20, Lanigan said.

“We also have our cookie cakes which are $21, which each cake is made just for them in five different kinds of cookies,” she said.

The Cookie Jar has had four orders of the cookie cakes for Sweetest Day so far, Lanigan said.

Little Miss Cupcakes offer made to order cakes and cupcakes for Sweetest Day.

“We can decorate anything that somebody wants for Sweetest Day,” said Angela Bowen, owner of Little Miss Cupcake. “We can make a heart-shaped small cake, we can decorate cupcakes for them.”

The cupcakes will be $20 for a dozen, decorated up for Sweetest Day, and then a heart-shaped cake and that will be $15, Bowen said.

Little Miss Cupcakes has already had 10 orders placed for Sweetest Day, Bowen said.

Sweetest Day is not in competition with Valentine’s Day, therefore that is why it is celebrated in October, whereas Valentine’s Day is in February, Donahue said.

“It’s just a nice day to let people that are real special to you know that they are real special and sweet,” Gibson said.
