Student volunteers for Organization for America have been active at the University in getting students to register to vote for the upcoming election.
OFA has been involved in voter registration since the fall semester began, said Sarah Ghose, a freshman and student volunteer for OFA said.
Ghose said that she began volunteering after she signed up to register to vote.
“I registered to vote and my field organizer took my number down, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to help out, and he called me and by then I was kind of iffy about it, but I started volunteering and I came to just love it thoroughly,” Ghose said.
The outcome has been good, Ghose said, as they have registered more than 5,000 students to vote.
Junior Mariah Butts said she agrees that what OFA is doing is effective as she is among the students registered to vote by student volunteers.
“A lot of people have not yet registered to vote, and it’s much easier to have them do it for you,” Butts said.
Freshman Logan Miller also said that the student volunteers are effective but could be improved by reaching out more.
“Maybe setting up meeting times for students to register versus on their way to class,” Miller said.
The process of registering is fast, Ghose said.
“It’s just their last name, first name, their address and their birthday and they sign it and their done,” Ghose said. “It takes way less time than everyone thinks.”
There are about 50 student volunteers for OFA, she said.
Ghose said she had her own approach to getting students to register to vote.
“I walk up to them and ask if they’ve registered, if not I ask them ‘why not,’” Ghose said. “If they tell they’re not really interested into politics or anything I tell them how important it is to them as a student and usually that makes them want to register and have their voice heard.”
Ghose said she thinks that voting is very important.
“A lot people think that their voice doesn’t count but it does,” she said. “All those voices come together to make a difference in the country and to make decisions that are beneficial to us all.”
